A liquid heritage

Belgian Beer Culture

Belgium is roughly the size of a small Swedish province. Yet it is home to over 400 active breweries, a tradition stretching back centuries, and a beer culture that UNESCO has classified as intangible world heritage.

They say beer is to a Belgian what wine is to a Frenchman. That is true – but it only tells half the story. In Belgium, beer is not just a drink. It is a kitchen ingredient, a table companion, and an expression of identity. They brew Easter beer and Christmas beer, summer beer and autumn beer, beer for weddings and beer to celebrate the rain finally stopping.

The Belgian approach to beer and food is something we carry with us at Hörnans Belgobar. A robust dubbel with slow-cooked meat. A light wheat beer with seafood. A spontaneously fermented fruit brew with dessert. In Belgium, such pairings are as natural as wine with cheese in France – and every bit as rewarding.

The oldest method

Spontaneously Fermented Beer

Spontaneously fermented beer, or lambic, is the beer world's answer to natural wine. No yeast is added. Instead the brew sits in open vessels, colonised by wild microorganisms in the air – a method older than any other brewing technique known.

This type of beer is produced almost exclusively around Brussels, where the local microflora gives it a distinctive character. The result is tart, with oxidised tones and sometimes a hint of vinegar.

Sound off-putting? It doesn't have to be. Spontaneously fermented beer is among the most fascinating things you can drink – complex, alive, and completely unlike anything else. With food, especially desserts and cheeses, it opens doors ordinary beer never can.

We always have a selection of lambic, gueuze, and fruit lambic in our fridges. Let us guide you.

Trappist Beer

Of the world's ten trappist breweries, five are in Belgium – Chimay, Orval, Westmalle, Westvleteren, and Rochefort. The Trappist order lives by self-sufficiency, and beer has been part of that equation for centuries.

Trappist is a protected designation with clear rules. The beer must be brewed within the monastery walls, under the monks' supervision, and any financial surplus must go to charitable causes.

The five Belgian monasteries produce very different beers, but common threads exist: full-bodied brews with character, often around 7–9 percent, with generous flavour profiles that make them excellent food beers. Many are also suitable for ageing, developing in the bottle during secondary fermentation.

We always have several trappist beers available. Just ask – we are more than happy to tell you about both the beers and their history.

Over 300 Varieties

We have over 300 Belgian beers at Hörnans Belgobar. A selection built over nearly three decades, bottle by bottle, with the same principle: quality and character over quantity.

A beer list is never finished. We regularly bring in brews from new Belgian microbreweries, purchase vintage beers, and hunt for limited editions. The selection lives and changes – that is what makes it exciting.

On tap we always have a thoughtful range spanning easy-drinking classics to more challenging brews. Wheat beer and pilsner for those who want it simple. Tripels and dubbels for those who want depth. And always something that surprises.

You don't need to be a beer expert to find your way. Tell us what you like and we will take it from there.
